East London line extension updates

The new Transport for London website carries some updates to the plans for the extension to the East London line. The plans have been curtailed somewhat and the new map shows a "core proposition" rather than the earlier map I linked to which had a line to Wimbledon too.
Personally I think that the plans look great, but I live in Forest Hill, which will be served by the new lines. I can imagine that if you live in SW or S London then you will not be too amused by the changes. There do not appear to be any project start or end dates, but there are some contact numbers for the project.

It is a really interesting place at the minute, i walked near there last week and there is a real feeling of victorian engineering with the huge girders and ornate stone work

It is time south London had a good tube line. An extension of the Victoria Line from Brixton is the obvious answer to the viability of a serviceable link into London. Ken Livingstone needs to get a review set up as quickly as possible for an extension of the Victoria Line to Streatham and beyond. South London needs access in to Central London. It will take enormous pressure off the Northern Line which is already over crowded, over used, poorly maintained, and frequently out of service. We can't depend on buses alone.

South London is appallingly served by the Tube, but does have an extensive surface rail network which is sorely in need of modernisation. Several projects, which are, I admit, extremely expensive would help cut south London journey times to the centre, West End and Docklands massively, with knock-on improvements to housing demand. If more of South London ‘feels central’ because of better journey times, and fewer and quicker interchanges the benefits will be felt throughout London and its suburbs. The East London Line extension is a start, but does not provide direct links to the centre or West End. The ‘Crossrail 2’ project for SWT routes would transform South-West London, as would a ‘crossrail 3’ either from Waterloo to Euston, or from London Bridge to Marylebone encompassing the Kent loop via Lewisham and Greenwich and the Chiltern Lines.

Tube projects would be reviving abandoned plans to extend the Bakerloo line to the South and East, and the Victoria Line Phase Three to Streatham. There was also talk of extending the Northern Line Charing Cross Branch southward, all of which would have immeasurable benefits to Londoners. All these are extremely expensive, but carry great benefits.

Once again it appears Streatham is short changed by Mayor Livingston with regard to the EL Line extension. Not only must we make do with the cattle truck Thameslink 2000 project ( its now 2005 ), but i fail to see how the proposed stage 2 via Denmark to Clapham Junction is going to help the majority of residents in Lambeth.
Still at least the good people with a good council of Wandsworth will be OK...just need extra parking for their 4x4's now...

VICTORIA LINE MUST BE EXTENDED FROM BRIXTON TOWARDS STREATHAM - I AGREE NORTHERN LINE WOULD BE LESS CROWDED AND BRIXTON WOULD BE DRASTICALLY LESS CHAOS -

SOUTH LONDON IS UNFAIRLY COVERED BY THE TUBE COMPARED WITH NORTH LONDON -

EXTENDING THE VICTORIA LINE WILL EASE THE MASSES OF PEOPLE IN BRIXTON

IT IS A VERY SIMPLE SOLUTION TO SOUTH LONDON'S TRANSPORT PROBLEMS - WHY ARE WE SOUTH LONDONER'S WAITING??????

Unfortunately the expense involved in digging a deep line means that neither the Victoria line nor the Bakerloo line will be exteneded, sensible as that seems.
