a couple of other tips I've gleaned:

- if it's a low traffic (aka, edit) wiki, arrange for it to send you an email when ever a post is made. This works on the assumption you check your email fairly often, and saves you constantly having to check the recent changes. I run two public wikis like this, and I typically find I can revert spam within the hour, often less.

- the wiki spam I've had the most trouble with recently involves loads of links being added. So I added a check to the code, that blocks edits with more than N urls in them. Thus far, 100% success. Obviously this depends on the nature of your wiki

- In addition to blocking ip's of users for editting, you can also block edits that contain certain content, specifically urls pointing to specific domains. Wikipedia uses this trick I belive.
