gardens, pests and pottering

So, Spring has arrived and I've been out in the garden. Every year as the warmth returns to the ground I get excited about gardening. The winter is such a depressing, filthy time, that spending more than a few minutes in the garden requires more effort than I have, plus the lack of light means standing in the dark if you try after work.

The sudden burst of green stuff from the ground seems to wipe away these memories and give a whole new array of things to do. Plus there is Gardeners' Question Time on the radio. I'm feeling better about the garden this year, even though we have even less time than last year. Oscar is capable and interested in gardening. We got rid of a filthy tree and created some light.

Each year seems to bring new pests, this year and last it is little green beetles which eat rosemary and lavender, he went on a special journey. We now have foxes too, which jump the fences and dig up the plants, but they get spooked if you peer at them.

One of the things I greatly appreciate in the garden is pottering. Directionless activity, but with a sense of achievement is a great way to spend the day. I've written in the past about the difference between mental and physical labour. Doing things in the garden, like DIY inside gives you an immediate and real sense of change. I spend my days designing web apps or writing about designing web apps, so to get a spade or a trowel or hammer in hand and make something is appreciated.
